This page contains some useful information about Finax (Accord) medication. It also contains a very useful informational booklet - see section 6.7.
Finax Information
Finax (Accord) is used to treat male pattern hair loss, a condition that affects hair follicles, and is also known by its brand name Finpecia. It works by blocking the production of a substance in the body known as the byproduct of hair loss. This results in hair loss, which may have a psychological effect. The byproduct of male pattern hair loss is testosterone, the hormone that causes hair loss. The byproduct of male pattern hair loss is finasteride, a medication used to treat enlarged prostates (also known as post-surgery male pattern baldness). Finasteride works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is responsible for shrinking of the prostate and is believed to cause symptoms of depression and other sexual problems. Prolonged use of Finasteride can lead to the shrinkage of prostate and bladder tissue. It also can cause decreased fertility in men. In men with male pattern hair loss, finasteride can increase the risk of developing prostate cancer. If you are taking finasteride for male pattern hair loss, it is not known if it will harm your baby. It is not known if finasteride will harm your ability to have an erection. It is not known if finasteride passes into breast milk. DHT is believed to cause these effects in men. In breast milk, it can pass into semen. If you are breast-feeding a baby, you may not develop Finax (Accord) in your breast. However, it is not known if Finax passes into semen or if it causes the baby to develop Finax (Accord). In men with prostate cancer, Finax may be used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It works by blocking the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which reduces the size of the prostate. This reduces the risk of acute urinary retention caused by BPH symptoms and by prostate cancer. Finax can also be used to treat symptoms of male pattern hair loss (and to prevent further hair loss), but it is not a cure for hair loss and will not help with the prostate enlargement. It is not known if Finax passes into breast milk. Finax (Accord) is not a contraceptive. It is not known if Finax passes into semen or if it causes the baby to develop Finax (Accord).
